Abstract

This dictionary includes terminology of the main sections of Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry and Calculus). It is designed for international students studying Mathematics at the stage of pre-university training.
The dictionary is a kind of educational reference book, in which the most commonly used mathematical terms are described. These terms form the basic terminological minimum for international students. Mathematical terms for the educational dictionary have been carried out in complete correspondence with the Mathematics curriculum of the preparatory faculty for foreign citizens. The definitions offered in basic Math textbooks, as well as in generally accepted Math reference books and dictionaries were used in the description of terminological units. There are more than 200 of terminological units in this educational dictionary.
Complex application of alphabetical and thesaurus guidelines of the mathematical terms describing, as well as their visual representation with drawings or formulas, provides the necessary communicative orientation of presented terminological units. They are already linguistic examples and knowledge of them allows the student to carry out professional communication in the language of specialty, in this case, the language of Mathematics.
Description of mathematical terms in each dictionary entry is performed on the same principle: the term nomination (the header word entries); its definition; an alphabetical list of the most common phrases with defined terms; illustrative drawings or formulas. All elements of the dictionary entry (except figures and formulas) are accompanied by translation equivalents.
For convenient dictionary using (see «Content») a list of all words of header entries is given with the corresponding pages; and at the end of the dictionary (in applications) the English-Russian list of header words and Russian-English list of phrases listed in the dictionary are also proposed.
The principle of the dictionary construction allows to use it as a training one with a variety of pedagogical methods at Math lessons. The dictionary can be useful for international students studying Mathematics in Russian and English languages both at the preparatory faculties and at the basic faculties in the universities, as well as for mathematicians-methodologists, researchers and translators.
